Today the students will work individually to complete one of the schools common tasks. A common task is used by Westerly High School to asses student's comprehension of important GSE's. They have created common tasks across curriculums that are designed to test for proficiency in certain areas. All common tasks are to be completed individually and the student must redo the task if they do not receive a grade of a P for Proficiency in all areas of the task. For this reason the students will work on this common task all class period and over the next few days until they have finished it and received a grade of a P. This common task is done now due to its relevance to the curriculum and since it has to do with ecology. This task asks the students to create a food web and to answer the questions that follow which analyze important key aspects of food webs and ecosystems.
Objectives
The student understands that matter cycles and energy flows through an ecosystem.
The students will be able to use data from a specific ecosystem to explain relationships or make predictions about how environmental disturbances affect te flow of energy or the cycling of matter in an ecosystem.
Students will be able to define and give an example of equilibrium in an ecosystem.
Students will be able to describe interdependence, interactions and explain the transfer of energy through trophic levels.
"Today we will begin day one of the Food Webs Common Task. It is halfway through the semester so I trust you all know what is expected of you for this common task. You are not to work with any other student, but I am here to monitor and explain if help is required. Please take a Common Task and begin working quietly. This will be collected and graded in accordance to the rubric. It would be wise to give this your best effort as you will not be permitted to move into the next grade without demonstrating proficiency on this common task. Good luck!"
"While you are working you can refer back to any notes we have already taken. It would be wise to refer to your textbook as well as notes and completed worksheets on this topic."
